Mafia looks like a game of luck on the first night, but after that it is all reading people. This tutorial walks through a first game, then gives strategy for the town, the mafia, the Doctor and the Detective. It uses the rules played on this site: the phone is the narrator, every player takes a night turn, the mafia’s target is the most-picked player and the town wins when every mafia member is out. If you need the full rules first, read the Mafia game rules.

What you will learn

  • How a game flows from the first role to the last vote.
  • What to look for as the town, beyond “who seems nervous”.
  • How the mafia can blend in without lying all the time.
  • When the Doctor should protect themselves and when the Detective should speak.
  • The beginner mistakes that decide most games.

Your first game, step by step

Imagine seven players: Ana, Ben, Cy, Di, Eve, Fay and Gus. Auto deals two mafia, one Doctor, one Detective and three Townspeople.

The roles. The phone goes round. Di and Gus see that they are the mafia and that the other is their teammate. Ben is the Doctor and Eve is the Detective. Ana, Cy and Fay are Townspeople. Nobody reacts, because everybody looks at a screen of the same shape.

Night 1. The phone goes to Ana first. She answers “Who do you suspect?” with a guess and passes it on. Ben protects himself; on the first night there is nothing better to go on. Cy answers the harmless question. Di picks Fay for the mafia. Eve checks Gus and learns “Mafia”. Fay answers the question. Gus sees that Di picked Fay and picks Fay too. The night ends with Fay as the target, and the Doctor protected somebody else.

Morning 1. The phone on the table says: “Fay was eliminated in the night. Fay was a Townsperson.” Fay stops playing.

Day 1. Eve now knows Gus is mafia, but if she says so at once, she may be the next target. She asks Gus why he was so quiet during the roles. Gus answers smoothly. Di jumps in to defend him a little too quickly. Cy notices.

The vote. The group votes together. Most of them are unsure, so they vote for no elimination. It is a cautious choice, but it gives the mafia another night.

Night 2. The mafia pick Eve because she was asking pointed questions. Ben cannot protect himself two nights running, so he protects Eve, who seemed to know something. In the morning, nobody was eliminated.

Day 2. Eve now feels safer and says she is the Detective and that Gus is mafia. Gus claims to be the Detective as well. The town has to choose. Cy points out that Di defended Gus on day 1, and that Eve was the mafia’s target last night, which makes sense only if she is dangerous to them. The town votes out Gus: “Gus was Mafia.” Next night the mafia have one member left, and the game goes on with the town in the lead.

That is a typical game: little information on the first day, then every night and vote adds a little more.

Strategy for the town

1. Talk about votes, not just feelings

“Ben seems nervous” is weak; everyone is nervous. “Ben voted for no elimination when we had a clear suspect” is something the group can discuss. Ask every player to give a reason for their vote and remember the reasons.

2. Watch pairs

Mafia members know each other. They rarely vote against a teammate, and they often step in to defend each other or to steer the vote towards somebody else. If two players always seem to agree, ask about it.

3. Use the night news

A night target tells you who the mafia were worried about. A player who was saved by the Doctor was probably a real threat to them. A player who is never targeted in a long game may be trusted by the mafia for a reason.

4. Don’t waste votes, but don’t freeze either

No elimination is a real option, and sometimes the right one. But every no-elimination day gives the mafia another free night. With a strong suspect, vote.

5. Count to parity

Keep track of how many players are left. If the mafia need only one more elimination to equal the rest, the town must vote someone out today, and must get it right.

Strategy for the mafia

1. Be a helpful townsperson

The best disguise is to do what a good town player does: ask questions, share suspicions, vote. Silence draws attention. So does being too loud.

2. Bluff close to the truth

If you claim things that never happened, someone will remember. Small, believable bluffs (“I thought Cy was too quick to accuse Eve”) are easier to keep up.

3. Don’t protect your teammate at any cost

If a teammate is about to be voted out, defending them hard can sink you both. Sometimes the right move is to join the vote and keep your own cover.

4. Pick night targets with a plan

Eliminate the players who are leading the town or who seem to know too much. Remember that the Doctor may be protecting them, and that the Doctor can’t protect the same player two nights in a row. Later mafia members see the earlier picks on the night screen, so the mafia can agree on one name without talking. If you disagree with a teammate, the most-picked player is the target and a tie goes to the earliest pick.

5. Claim a role only when you must

Claiming to be the Detective can work late in the game, but the real Detective will answer, and the town will compare stories.

Tips for the Doctor

  • Night 1: protecting yourself is a sensible default.
  • Later: protect whoever the mafia most want to remove: a Detective who has spoken, or the player leading the vote.
  • Mind the rule: you can’t protect the same player two nights in a row. The mafia know this too and may target last night’s protected player.
  • Stay quiet: a Doctor who announces their role becomes the next target. Reveal only when it changes a vote.

Tips for the Detective

  • Check active players first. Loud, influential players matter most, whether they are town or mafia.
  • Keep notes in your head. Every “Not mafia” result clears someone you can trust.
  • Reveal at the right time. When you have found a mafia member and the vote is close, speak up. Expect the mafia to target you that night.
  • Prepare for a counter-claim. A mafia member may claim to be the Detective too. Share your full list of checks; a fake claim is hard to keep consistent.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Taking too long on a night turn. Everyone’s night turn should take about the same time. Read your card, decide and pass.
  • Peeking. Look away when it is not your turn. The pass screen helps, but only if everyone plays fair.
  • Voting without reasons. It hands the vote to whoever talks loudest, which is often the mafia.
  • Forgetting the parity rule. The mafia don’t need to eliminate everyone. When they equal the rest, they win.
  • Talking after being eliminated. You know your role and maybe more. Stay quiet.

A practice plan

Play your first game with 6 or 7 players, the Doctor and the Detective on, Reveal role on and a 3-minute day timer. Once everyone knows the flow, try the secret vote, which makes the mafia’s job harder because they can’t follow the room. For a bigger challenge, switch Reveal role off, so every vote is made without knowing who was who. When you are ready, play Mafia with your group, or switch to the Werewolf theme for a new setting with the same rules.

Frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask us.

How do you find the mafia?

Look at votes more than words. Mafia members tend to avoid voting against each other, push hard on easy targets and change their minds when a teammate is in danger. Ask everyone to explain their vote and compare the reasons with what happened later.

How do you bluff as the mafia?

Act exactly like a curious townsperson: ask questions, share suspicions and vote with the group most of the time. Don't defend a teammate too hard and don't go quiet. A bluff that is close to the truth is easier to keep up than a big invented story.

Should the Detective reveal themselves?

Usually not on the first day. A Detective who speaks up becomes the mafia's next target. Reveal when you have found a mafia member and the vote could go wrong without you, or when the town is close to losing.

Who should the Doctor protect?

On the first night, often yourself, because you can't yet know who is important. Later, protect the player the mafia most want gone: a Detective who has spoken up, or a sharp player who is leading the town.
